Once our stay in San Francisco was over, the only thing left to do was to drive back to LA airport via a trail of interesting destinations. We left our San Francisco hotel at 6am so that we could make it to the early morning whale watching boat in Monterey (pronounced "mon-a-ray" by Americans, rather than "mon-ta-ree" which is what I had been calling it for weeks.) We were almost the only people there - it was a chilly day for garden viewing so we spent a lot of time in the rainforest area! It's a lovely space, but what caught my eye the most was the extremely grand castle-like houses that overlook the gardens. Apparently they were built as mansions
