It would be strange to post photos from the US without mentioning the recent election result. I am completely devastated, both for the people of America and because of the effect this will have on the rest of the world. Trump is a deeply racist, misogynist and bigoted man, and millions of people voted for him. I worry for marginalised people in the US because of harsh policy decisions that will affect their everyday lives and the legitimacy that this election has given to prejudice and intolerance, and the politics of hatred and fear. My experience of America was far removed from that (though of course, as a white tourist, it was bound to be.) James and I really fell in love with Venice beach, and I’ve been struggling to match my deep desire to return and bathe in the sunshine with my knowledge of the turmoil that is happening in US at the moment. American friends, I am thinking of you right now.
We loved the beach so much, we returned on our last day before our flight home, to swim in the sea and eat at Thai Vegan one last time. It’s such an infinite expanse of sand and sea, perfectly embellished with palm trees. The shops on the boardwalk are pretty tacky – they remind me a lot of Camden Market in London – but there’s something about the atmosphere that I couldn’t get enough of. It’s that perfect summer holiday vibe – there’s nowhere in particular to be, no one’s in a hurry, people are skateboarding or surfing or cycling the day away in the sunshine. Our Airbnb host drank margaritas on the beach every weekend for Sunday Funday. What a life! I’ve been trying to implement a bit more Sunday Funday into my weekends since.

One of the best things about going on a sunny holiday is that you get to wear your summer clothes. Living in Scotland, I rarely get to wear a t-shirt and *never* a swimming costume outside, so I made the most of it. I actually struggled to find hot weather clothes in my wardrobe, but I’m pretty pleased with this outfit. I got this skirt at a clothes schwop at the Shrub, so didn’t pay anything for it, I just exchanged it with the results of a wardrobe clear-out. I think it’s really unusual, I love the front split (although it’s not a practical bike riding outfit) and I think the embroidery is really cool. I’m also obsessed with the plunged neckline trend that’s been hanging around for the last year or two and I’m lucky that I’m flat chested enough to wear swimsuits like this without worrying about an incident, haha. I have so much sheer / mesh clothing, so it’s great to have a versatile costume like this that I can wear underneath, without hiding the detail of the top or feeling too naked. Just editing these photos I can almost feel the sand under my feet. I promised myself I wouldn’t take another long haul flight, but the temptation to escape the Scottish winter to California is real.
I’ll leave you with this bizarre Weezer video featuring Venice Beach. I’ve been watching it on repeat and playing the “I’ve been there!” game. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
