I’ve decided to blog about my visit to Old Perithia separately to the rest of my holiday pictures because I have so many photos and it was such a special place. Old Perithia is an abandoned village in the mountains of Northern Corfu. People settled here originally to escape from the constant raids by pirates that they were subjected to when living by the coast. In more recent times (when pirates no longer terrorise the seas) the villagers moved closer to the coast to set up New Perithia, leaving Old Perithia empty and abandoned. Now it’s a popular tourist attraction, so there are some tavernas, a couple of bed and breakfasts and some small shops selling local produce. We visited just as the sun was setting on the mountains. The golden light was so beautiful, and it was the perfect atmosphere in which to explore the crumbling old buildings. I spent a lot of time running around with my camera, fascinated by the way everything looked bathed in the golden sunshine.
If I could choose to do one thing from my holiday in Corfu again, I would choose either to hire a boat again or to visit Old Perithia. I honestly felt like I was in a film, everything was so atmospheric and it was amazing being surrounded by so much emotive imagery. When I did art at school, I worked on a project about empty spaces and spent a lot of time sneaking into abandoned buildings to take pictures and collect things for my scrapbook. There’s something fascinating about walking into somewhere filled with evidence of human activity but empty of life. I love how eerie it is. Have you ever visited any abandoned spaces?
What a great post! Your photos re beautiful but your words are also so descriptive–together they really capture the feeling of the place. It looks magical!
Love this post, I’m happy you dedicated an entire post to this city. You’re pictures are stunning and a bit mysterious. Makes me wonder what it looked like before it was abandoned.
These photos are absolutely gorgeous! Thanks so much for the lovely comment-just let me know if you’d ever like me to make you one of those iphone cases

Oh I just love old, abandoned places like this. Equally beautiful and creepy. Looks like an amazing place to explore. I wonder what it looked like back in it hay day.
The dress you are wearing looks so beautiful. The pictures seems like a different place/time. Great blog.

Oh my Jess, it looks and sounds beautiful. Reminds me of the deserted area of Turkey (Kaya Koy) I went to last year, we were there around the same time of day and it was so magical. Stunning photos xx
